Delphi

According to tradition, Delphi was the geographical center of the world, the meeting point of two eagles dispatched by Zeus from the ends of the universe to find the center of the world.  The history of the area goes back to Mycenaean times (14th-11th c. BC) where inhabitants worshiped the deity Ge (Earth).  In the following period, the cult of Apollo became established at Delphi.  The structures pictured, dedicated to Apollo and Athena, date from the 8th and 7th c. BC.
